Summer Reading Program

June 12 – August 22, 2026
It’s Free! It’s Fun! It’s for All Ages!

Summer reading is great at any age, but is particularly important for young people. Kids who don’t read during the summer can lose up to a third of what they learned in the previous school year. Summer Reading Program activities for youth aim to engage young people and families to help prevent the “summer slide” and build a lifelong love of reading.

Grand Prize Drawings

Each branch will draw winning tickets for kids, teens and adults. Each winner will have the opportunity to choose one of these awesome prizes:

A $100 GIFT CERTIFICATE to a local restaurant or book store.
A LEGO® set of your choice (up to $100 in value).

Summer Reading Challenge

ANYONE – FROM BABIES TO GROWN-UPS – CAN PLAY! JUST READ OR BE READ TO!

Signup begins June 1 for the Summer Reading Challenge (start tracking your reading June 12).
Beginning June 1, kids and teens can stop by any NOLS branch to pick up a free book. Adults can stop by their branch for a coupon good for one free book from their local Friends of the Library group.
Set a reading goal! Decide how long you’d like to read each day.
From June 12 through August 22, 2026: Keep track of each day you read, listen, or are read to, using the online tracker in Beanstack. You can also pick up a paper tracking sheet at the library or Bookmobile.

Read, listen, or be read to for 30 days to get a special T-shirt or tote bag with a custom design by local artist Delbert Sanchez, and be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing!
Read, listen, or be read to for 60 days to receive a second entry into the Grand Prize Drawing.
All reading must be completed and tracked online or submitted to your NOLS branch by Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Grand Prize Drawings will happen at each branch on Monday, August 24, 2026. Winners will be notified and a list will be posted on this webpage within a week.

The Summer Reading Lists are full of book titles to keep children engaged in reading throughout the summer. Each list is available here to download. Titles on the 2026 Summer Reading Lists were compiled and annotated by members of ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee.
