NOLS Prepares for Windows 11 Transition

In mid-October 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 and all previous versions of the Windows operating system. This change means that updates, patches, and security fixes will no longer be provided for these systems. Since a majority of public and staff computers in the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) network are too old to meet the requirements for Windows 11, upgrades are necessary across the system.

The NOLS IT Department has been preparing for this transition well in advance including budgeting for new computers and equipment to ensure a smooth update. While most machines will be replaced, a handful of recently purchased computers are already capable of running Windows 11 and will remain in service.

Benefits of the Upgrade

Windows 11 will bring a range of new features and improvements for staff and patrons, including:

  • Enhanced security protections
  • Improved system performance
  • A modernized and user-friendly interface

The upgrade also provides NOLS with an opportunity to standardize equipment across all branches. By configuring computers consistently and streamlining the integration of software, staff will be better supported, and patrons will experience more reliable technology service.

A Critical Hub for Digital Access

The computer replacement project ensures that NOLS can continue meeting community needs with reliable, up-to-date technology. Public access to technology at NOLS plays a vital role in bridging the digital divide, offering essential resources for those without reliable internet or devices at home.

In 2024 alone, the library system had 41,841 public computer sessions totaling 28,874 hours of use, highlighting the strong demand for access to technology for information, job searches, schoolwork, communication, and more. Additionally, patrons made 186,478 prints and connected to free Wi-Fi 83,314 times, underscoring NOLS’s role as a critical hub for digital access and productivity.

Deployment Timeline

The rollout of new computers will happen in phases across the library system. Work began at the Port Angeles Main Library in September and is set to be completed in all branches by the end of November.

Supporting the Community

To reduce tech waste and support community organizations with additional technology resources, NOLS will identify surplus equipment that can still be used effectively in other settings once the transition is complete. With coordination through United Way of Clallam County, nonprofits across the county will have the opportunity to utilize these resources.
