NOLS and SilverKite Community Arts collaborated on a Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 8, for an early virtual celebration of Juneteenth presented by The Mahogany Project. Juneteenth is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was declared a holiday in 1986.
Juneteenth commemorates the full emancipation of enslaved African American people on June 19, 1865, 2 years and 6 months after the Emancipation Proclamation.
The online interactive workshop explores the history, legacy and lasting impact of Juneteenth. Take a journey from the past to the present with music, drumming, storytelling and reflection. Artists featured include Niela Maryam, Bernie Hall and Merri Ann Osborne.
NOLS has partnered with SilverKite Community Arts to offer this program. SilverKite offers arts programs for older adults, dementia-friendly arts programs, and intergenerational arts experiences open to the public.
