Clallam Bay
Expansion Project
2008 |
The Clallam Bay Branch will be closed to the
public beginning on Monday, July 28 to complete the final stage of
construction work. The expanded branch is expected to reopen to
the public on Monday, September 22, 2008. While
the library is closed, customers may continue to place holds for books
and other materials at www.nols.org.
When held materials are received at the branch, staff will contact
customers and arrange for “drive-through pick-up”. Checked-out
materials may be dropped in the return bin as usual.
The Friends of the Clallam Bay Library began fundraising for a
much-needed expansion to the Library in 1999. They worked tirelessly
for several years, holding events, writing grant requests and
soliciting private and corporate donations. Architect Gerald Schlie
of Beaver, Washington designed additions for the west and east sides
of the building, which together will expand the current space of
1,190 sq ft to 3,872 sq ft, or an increase of over 60%, once the
building is complete, which is projected to be November-December
2008. |

A pledge of $100,000 from former Rayonier CEO Lee Nutter
spurred a new round of donations, including an anonymous gift of stock,
as well as major donations from the Paul G Allen Family Foundation and
the Benjamin Phillips Trust. In February 2008 the Board of Trustees
awarded the construction contract to Primo Construction of Sequim,
Washington, and construction began on April 14, 2008.
The expanded library will offer a public meeting room, more space for
comfortable seating, a larger children’s area, an area especially for
teens, and more space for public computers. The new building will
feature a covered ramp leading to the front door, an enclosed vestibule
for better energy efficiency and security, and a service ramp for more
efficient handling of deliveries.
Please check back for further project updates. The Friends of the
Library are still fundraising for furniture and equipment. For
