More information about the Library closure
The Library is closing for one week in the spring and one week in the fall because NOLS has a $163,000 budget shortfall for the 2010 fiscal year. The first one-week closure will be from Monday, March 29 through Saturday, April 3. Each one-week closure will save approximately $36,000.
The balance of the budget shortfall will be made up by a second one-week closure in the fall of 2010, tentatively scheduled for August 30 through September 4. Other personnel reductions will be made, fewer new books will be bought, and approximately $88,000 will be transferred from the Library District’s reserve for economic uncertainty.
This budget gap is the result of the cumulative effects of inflation, the loss of timber revenue, and Washington law which caps the Library’s property tax budget at no more than a 1% increase per year without a vote.
Between Monday, March 29 and Saturday, April 3:
- All NOLS libraries will be closed.
- The community meeting rooms will not be available.
- Due dates for checked-out items will be extended so that no items become due during this week.
- No fines will be charged between 3/29 and 4/3 for materials on your account.
- No returned materials will be accepted during this time. Please return books and other library items after April 4.
- Held items may not be picked up.
- Interlibrary loan (ILL) requests will not be taken; ILL’s may not be picked up or returned.
- Internet access, including wireless access, will be shut down.
- All outside book drops will be closed and locked. Patrons are advised to NOT leave books and other library items outside the book drops. The Library will NOT retrieve or check-in materials left outside the buildings between 3/29 and 4/4; patrons are financially responsible for any items checked out on their accounts and left outside.
